CMSA: BACKGROUND 

The Case Management Society of Australia  was founded in 1996 in response to growing demands for support and information about Case Management. It was established with critical support from health industry stakeholders.

CMSA is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the support and development of the practice of quality Case Management.

The CMSA was established to:

  • Publicise, advance and encourage the practice of Case Management in Australia.
  • Open benchmarking opportunities within Australia and internationally.
  • Educate health care professionals, health care delivery organisations, health funds and the general public in the advancement of quality health care; and promote the health benefits and cost/benefit effectiveness of Case Management.
  • Promote the professionalism and science of the practice of Case Management in the development of high standards of performance, skill, service and conduct of Case Managers.
  • Provide a national forum for, and assist in, unifying the common interests of professionals actively engaged in Case Management through discussions, research and courses of study in the field of Case Management, as well as through the Society's publications, conferences and meetings.
  • Establish the means by which persons and firms offering services or products within or to the Case Management field may coordinate their efforts to advance the practice.
  • Create opportunities for Case Managers to network with each other.
  • The Case Management Society of Australia is the sole representative body of Case Management in Australia. We are the Australian affiliate of the Case Management Society International - a global affiliation that provides education forums, research and networking opportunities, which is linked with other Societies in such places as Africa, Spain, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and the USA.

CMSA: THE STORY SO FAR 

Case Managers are now being charged with the responsibility to implement Case Management programs by ensuring collaboration between various disciplinary groups and coordination in the provision of services. There is a focus on quality cost-effective outcomes, and Case Managers are seeking information on how to go about this. CMSA has been established to meet this need.

 

The establishment of an organisation to promote interest, knowledge and standards in Case Management such as the Case Management Society of Australia has provided a focus for practitioners, service providers and funding bodies who are confronting the challenges of the Case Management approach.

Within the first two years of its inception, the focus of the Society broadened to recognise the broad application of Case Management in diverse settings within the health and human services industries in Australia.

CMSA BOARD

CMSA has broad industry support. It is overseen by a Board with wide ranging representation from the private sector, Case Management practitioners and academia.

 

The Board consists of the following people:


     
           

Scott Trueman (Chairman)                               

Scott is the Chairman of the Case Management Society of Australia (Ltd) Board elected to this position in November 2009. He has been on the Board since November 2008. Scott is also Manager, Mental Health Education Unit, Remote Area Mental Health Services, Queensland Health, which services the communities of Cape York and the islands of the Torres Strait. Previous to this he was Manager of Primary Health Services in Far North South Australia. These services covered mental health, indigenous, domestic violence, midwifery, men's health drug and alcohol and diabetes, all of which rely heavily for there successful delivery on the principles of case management. Scott has also had substantial experience working within the mental health system in the community setting and it was during this period of employment that Scott's interest in the principles of case management was ignited in attempting to develop better outcomes for consumers. Scott has a background in nursing and holds degrees in commerce (accounting) and law. He completed his Masters degree in Health Service Management in 2009 and has commenced his PhD thesis. Raising the profile of CMSA, making it the leader in its field and continuing to develop and contribute to the professionalism and knowledge of the organisation are his aims.

 

Gary Humphrey (Vice Chairman)

I bring to CMSA a perspective of one who has worked in a variety of case management roles across a variety of organisations and departments. Combined with my management experience I am an individual who is motivated towards achieving best possible evidence based practices.

My qualifications and background include the following:

 Advanced Diploma of Community Services

Bachelor of Social Work Honours

Advanced Diploma of Business Management

Organisations and positions through this period have included the following:

An advisor for a federal local member

As a professional educator and an innovative and professionally minded person, the personal characteristics I  bring to CMSA are excellent communication skills, motivation, leadership and inspiration. I have a proven track record in delivering a management style that reflects a services mission and focuses on the continual improvement of services for people. I have demonstrated a high level of interpersonal skills and highly developed organisational skills, I am a resourceful individual and highly perceptive in analysing situations. Gary has been on the CMSA Board since 2008.

      

Evan Nathanson   (Treasurer)

My current position is Director of Aged and Disability at Mitchell Community Health Services where  I am currently managing the whole range of HACC services, including In home support, allied health, PAG, delivered meals, District Nursing, Aged Care Case Management and Disability Case Management.  I have also managed case management services including Linkages, CACP, and EACH, and have worked in Case Management and supervised and managed case managers for over 10 years.  This includes work in community aged care, disability, family violence, corrections and community health. I have completed an MBA as well as a Master of Management degree. I am also a registered psychologist with over 15 years experience leading people in the Human Services industry. I have operated at senior management level regarding strategic and operational issues, and have played a significant role in change management.  I bring a broad range of knowledge and experience to the board with a broad view of case management and the role that case managers play in assisting clients. Evan has been on the CMSA Board since 2008.

      

     

Kathy Day

Kathy Day, RNDiv1;BN;Grad Dip Case Management; Master of Nursing (Case Management), Cert IV TAA; CMSA member since 2001. As a CMSA Board member since 2005 my roles have included Editor of the CMSA Newsletter, member of the CMSA training and conference organizing committees and development of the National Standards of Practice for Case Management. I am the Manager of Aged Health and Rehabilitation at Bellarine Community Health Ltd, combined with CM mentoring and teaching at TAFE. With more than 20 yrs case management, management and teaching experience, I have presented on case management throughout Australia, USA and NZ. My strong relationships with CMSA USA and New England and case management networks developed during visits to organizations across the USA (2002, 2004, 2007, and 2009) contribute to maintaining contemporary case management practice knowledge which I share with colleagues. My interest in case management and elder abuse led to my thesis, “Case Management of Elder Abuse in the Community Setting” published in 2007. Other involvements include founder of Geelong Case Management Network, Board Member of the Elder Abuse Prevention Association, member of Australian and International Networks for the Prevention of Elder Abuse; Commonwealth and Victorian Government discussions on Elder Abuse contributing to the formation of national legislation and state policies. I believe in case management and case managers and there is still much I can contribute to CMSA. Aware of the commitment required as a board member, I believe have the drive and capacity to continue in this role.    Kathy has been on the CMSA Board since 2005.

           Steve Bailey

I have been a member of the CMSA for some years and I am particularly interested in the work that the Board is currently doing in establishing standards and certification for case management and case managers. I have had a keen interest in evidence based practice, service quality and training for many years and I believe that I am able to contribute to this debate and the development of standards and certification in case management. I am currently working in the Mental Health sector and have worked in a variety of case management roles in the broader disability sector over the past twenty-five years both as a manager and as a “hands on” worker. During this time I have also been a member of the Board of Management of the NSW Council for Intellectual Disability and Nepean Independent Living Committee and I am currently a member of the Board of Management of the GROW Community. I have been on the Board of CMSA since March 2008 and am a member of the Publications & Conference Committees.

          

Eliza Pross 

Eliza Pross is the Planning and Development Manager at Community Care (Northern Beaches) Inc. (CCNB), and has been working for the organisation for over 6 years. Eliza is a qualified Social Worker and has a Masters of Policy Studies (Human Services). Eliza has previous experience as a case manager, and is now responsible for the management of a range of research and development projects, both within and beyond CCNB. Eliza has experience in the development and delivery of case management training, including the provision of training to Aboriginal case management services. Eliza currently leads an industry collaboration, in partnership with Macquarie University, the primary aim of which is to develop a long term research agenda for case management in NSW, with a particular emphasis on the measurement of case management outcomes. Eliza has experience in writing for publication and conference presentation on case management in NSW and nationally. She is a member of the Aboriginal community, and is passionate about developing and supporting

the capacity of Aboriginal services in the provision of case management. Eliza would bring to the Board of CMSA practical experience in the provision and management of community case management services, as well as an academic and strategic knowledge about the issues facing case management now and into the future. Eliza has been on the CMSA Board since 2008.

       

  

Katherine McNaught  

I am a Registered Nurse with 8 years experience in Community Care. I have worked both in the ACT and Victoria as a Case Manager and District Nurse. I have been employed with Baptcare (Community Aged Care Package Provider) for the last 7 years and am the Manager of Quality and Clinical Care (Community Aged Care). As a recent recruit to the world of management I feel that I can bring a ‘grassroots’ level perspective to the Board. Working as a Case Manager with Baptcare for 5 years has allowed me to develop a broad understanding of the role and a keen interest in ensuring the continuing development of the profession. As the Manager of Quality and Clinical Care at Baptcare I work towards ensuring that we achieve best practice standards in both clinical governance and case management. In my day to day work I utilise the practical experience that I have gained in Case Management to ensure that any system and process changes will be workable and engaging for Care Managers. I believe that this experience enables me to make a valuable contribution to the CMSA board. Katherine has been on the CMSA Board since 2008.

          

Nicole Brooke  

Nicole Brooke is a passionate and committed practitioner and researcher, looking to support case management within Australia and internationally. Nicole has extensive insight into the community and residential aged care industry. She seeks to bring a breadth of knowledge and insight into the complexities of case management, to the CMSA. With intent to further develop resources and continue discussions to support case management in its future. Nicole Brooke is currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS). Nicole has worked in various senior management positions within including Director of Nursing, and more recently the Director of Clinical Practice at UTS. Nicole has Bachelor of Nursing (ACU), Masters of Adult Education (UTS) and is currently completing her Doctorate of Philosophy (UTS) on Case Management. Nicole currently teaches in nursing and management areas across undergraduate and postgraduate areas. Nicole is seeking to implement case management philosophies into the Bachelor of Nursing Course (UTS) and write a Graduate Diploma in Case Management. Nicole Brookes’ PhD research has been about identifying elements that make case management effective, and implementation within the residential aged care industry. The range of approaches and models reviewed has been across a large number of industry sectors including but not exclusively; acute care, community, mental health, and aged care. Nicole has been an invited speaker at a number of national and international conferences.  Nicole has been on the CMSA Board since 2008.

    

  

Vivian  

I am the current Executive Officer for NSW Community Options Projects Inc. NSW COPS is the Peak organisation representing 92 outlets of Community Case Management services and their specialist Case Manager Practitioners across NSW. I have held this position for 10 years. I have a 30 year history of working across both  Health, Community and Residential care with credentials that comprise a Nursing and Social Sciences background.

In the role of EO, I have worked with diligence to lift the profile of Case Management in NSW at all levels of government also with related sector partners whilst simultaneously sourcing and instigating learning options to support the professionalisation of our workforce.  I have contributed to the development and implementation of numerous case management initiatives across multiple jurisdictions in this time, some examples would be;

In Research: Case Management Collaboration Partnership Research Project with Industry Partners and Macquarie University.

In System Reform: NSW Expert Group through DADHC on ‘Access to Services’ for people in NSW; Advisory member for NSW Access Point Project;  Advisory member for ComPack a partnership approach to acute care discharge with NSW Health and NSW COPS .

In Direct Service Support: Advocate, develop and implement models built on community case management across broad funding sources in response to identified need. I am responsible for maintaining a strong regional structure that supports the statewide network.

Vivian was elected to the CMSA Board in Nov 2009.

               

      

Richard Dzwonkowski  

I am currently employed as a Senior Case Manager for Melbourne Citymission Youth At Risk program at the Sunshine VisyCares Hub Site. Prior to this appointment, I worked as a Personal Support Program Co-ordinator working with clients who had non vocational barriers within a clinical counselling case management model . I have worked at Department of Human Services,  as an Advanced Case Manager, for 12 months.  Other positions I have held include  6 years at Centrelink as a Personal Advisor and Disability Officer and prior to entering the field of Community work I was a librarian working at  the University of Melbourne  and Monash University.

My passion is in helping clients within a holistic case management model. I value my work as a Case Manager and believe that many allied professions need Case Managers, as we are very skilled in linking clients to appropriate services in the community and  a highly  organised professionals who can adapt to change.   I would like to provide a voice for the new era of delivering services in a toughing economic climate through active and promoting  the Case Management model as a recognised profession in its own right.  I  am an outgoing person who enjoys public speaking events, community connections and strong on organising events and promotions.

Richard was elected to the CMSA Board in Nov 2009.
