CMSA: BACKGROUND |

The Case Management Society of Australia was founded in 1996 in response to growing demands for support and information about Case Management. It was established with critical support from health industry stakeholders. CMSA is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the support and development of the practice of quality Case Management. The CMSA was established to:

CMSA: THE STORY SO FAR |
| Case
Managers are now being charged with the responsibility to
implement Case Management programs by ensuring
collaboration between various disciplinary groups and
coordination in the provision of services. There is a
focus on quality cost-effective outcomes, and Case
Managers are seeking information on how to go about this.
CMSA has been established to meet this need.
The establishment of an organisation to promote interest, knowledge and standards in Case Management such as the Case Management Society of Australia has provided a focus for practitioners, service providers and funding bodies who are confronting the challenges of the Case Management approach. Within the first two years of its inception, the focus of the Society broadened to recognise the broad application of Case Management in diverse settings within the health and human services industries in Australia. Kerrie Maher Kerrie has worked in a range of aged, disability, health and community sectors including case management and assessment programs for the last 9 years. Kerrie is the Innovations, Research and Development Manager with Care Connect Ltd and has qualifications in disability and business management. Kerrie has worked in such areas as local government, allied health, visual impairment, Aged Care Assessment Teams, Home and Community Care assessment and the Primary Care Partnerships. Kerrie is also a member of the Victorian Linkages Programs Network and the National Community Care Case Managers Network. Kerrie has been on the CMSA Board since 2005.

Lawrence Walsh is an Occupational Therapist with over 23 years experience working in various areas of health, disability, community support and injury management both in the private and public sectors.He is currently employed by the Motor Accident’s Insurance Board which is a Tasmanian Government Business Enterprise that provides medical, rehabilitation and income benefits on a no-fault basis to persons injured as a result of a motor accident while enabling access to common law. Part of his work has been to introduce and develop Case Management as a specialist and distinct service for clients who have sustained severe injuries and disabilities and who may require complex long term care and support. He works with a number of rehabilitation provider groups and assists the claims teams to achieve positive outcomes for clients. Lawrence acts as an advisor to the MAIB’s Injury Prevention and Management Foundation and was the co-founder of the Case Management Interest Networks in Tasmania. Since being part of the Board Lawrence has represented the CMSA on the Community Services and Health Industry Council’s review of the Community Services Training Packages. He was part of an Industry Reference Group which reviewed and endorsed changes to the VET Case Management qualifications. For the last 12 months, Lawrence has also led the Practice Improvement Group – a sub-committee of the Board set up to look at professional practice issues including certification. Lawrence has been on the CMSA Board since 2006. |

Kate Mason is the Team Manager of the Case Management team at the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) in Victoria and has served on the CMSA board since August 2006. The TAC is the compulsory third party insurer for Victorian's injured in transport accidents and delivers case management services to approximately 470 people per year who have acquired a severe brain injury or spinal cord injury as a result of a transport accident. Kate’s background is in disability services having worked in various case management roles both in Australia and England for the past 12 years. She has a Bachelor of Applied Science (Disability Studies) and is currently completing her Graduate Diploma in Public Policy and Management. While serving on the board, Kate has played an active role in the Practice Improvement and Conference Planning committees. This has included the development of the member survey, participation in the CHC02 review process, work on the potential Certification model for case managers and planning of the 2007 and 2008 CMSA conferences. Kate has been on the CMSA Board since 2007. |

Kathy Day Kathy is a Registered Nurse who holds a BN, Grad Dip Case Management, Cert IV Voc. and Ed. Training and Assessment and is currently in her final year of a Masters of Nursing (Case Management). Her current role is Manager, Aged Health & Rehabilitation, Bellarine Community Health Inc., Victoria. She previously worked as the Regional Manager of Southern Cross Care (Vic) Barwon Region. Kathy's 28 years of experience includes institutional, educational and community settings. Kathy was instrumental in the formation of the Geelong Regional Case Management Network Group in 2003 which continues to organise ongoing case management seminars in the region. She was a recipient of two scholarships for continuing professional development in 2003 and a CMSA travel grant last year. Kathy has undertaken study tours of case management organisations in the USA in 2002 and in the USA and Scotland in 2004. Kathy has presented at Case Management and Aged Care Conferences in USA and Australia and has a special interest in elder abuse issues. Kathy is also a Board Member of the Elder Abuse Prevention Association of Australia. Kathy has been on the CMSA Board since 2005. |

Deb Richman RN, RM, Grad Dip Adv Nurs (Critical Care), Grad Cert CM. I have extensive case management, nursing, policy, planning and project management experience in both the public and private sectors. I have complemented practical experience with formal tertiary qualifications obtained through the University of Tasmania and the University of Melbourne. In my current position as Case Management Coordinator at Calvary Health Care Tasmania I have been instrumental in the introduction and implementation of case management in an acute private hospital setting. I have held this position since April 2002. Additionally, until recently I chaired the Little Company of Mary Health Care (LCMHC) National Case Management Committee. This committee aims to implement a consistent case management model across all acute Calvary hospitals in Australia. A further national project has seen the implementation of a National LCMHC Admission Package. As project manager I was responsible for consultation and coordination across 8 acute sites, ensuring the needs of all were met. I am currently a participant in the LCMHC Executive Development Program. Due for completion in November 2008 this program comprises the integration of leadership, ethics, team and interpersonal skills, along with the corporate and commercial skills required to be a future leader. I have been on the Board of CMSA since March 2008 and am a member of the Governance Committee. My self-motivation, commitment to professional development, and high professional standards demonstrate my ability to continue to make a meaningful contribution to the Board of the Case Management Society, and Case Management as a whole. |

Steve Bailey I have been a member of the CMSA for some years and I am particularly interested in the work that the Board is currently doing in establishing standards and certification for case management and case managers. I have had a keen interest in evidence based practice, service quality and training for many years and I believe that I am able to contribute to this debate and the development of standards and certification in case management. I am currently working in the Mental Health sector and have worked in a variety of case management roles in the broader disability sector over the past twenty-five years both as a manager and as a “hands on” worker. During this time I have also been a member of the Board of Management of the NSW Council for Intellectual Disability and Nepean Independent Living Committee and I am currently a member of the Board of Management of the GROW Community. I have been on the Board of CMSA since March 2008 and am a member of the Publications & Conference Committees. |

Scott Trueman Scott is the Manager, of the Nurse Education Unit, Remote Area Mental Health Services, Queensland Health, a role he took on early in 2009. Previous to this he was Manager of Primary Health Services in rural South Australia. These services covered mental health, indigenous, domestic violence, midwifery, men’s health drug and alcohol and diabetes, all of which rely heavily for there successful delivery on the principles of case management. Scott has also had substantial experience working within the mental health system in the community setting and it was during this period of employment that Scott’s interest in the principles of case management was ignited in attempting to develop better outcomes for consumers. Scott has a background in nursing and holds degrees in commerce (accounting) and law. He is presently completing a Masters degree in Health Service Management. Raising the profile of CMSA and continuing to develop and contribute to the professionalism and knowledge of the organisation are his aims. Scott is a member of the CMSA Board elected to his position in November 2008. |

Eliza Pross Eliza Pross is the Planning and Development Manager at Community Care (Northern Beaches) Inc. (CCNB), and has been working for the organisation for over 6 years. Eliza is a qualified Social Worker and has a Masters of Policy Studies (Human Services). Eliza has previous experience as a case manager, and is now responsible for the management of a range of research and development projects, both within and beyond CCNB. Eliza has experience in the development and delivery of case management training, including the provision of training to Aboriginal case management services. Eliza currently leads an industry collaboration, in partnership with Macquarie University, the primary aim of which is to develop a long term research agenda for case management in NSW, with a particular emphasis on the measurement of case management outcomes. Eliza has experience in writing for publication and conference presentation on case management in NSW and nationally. She is a member of the Aboriginal community, and is passionate about developing and supporting the capacity of Aboriginal services in the provision of case management. Eliza would bring to the Board of CMSA practical experience in the provision and management of community case management services, as well as an academic and strategic knowledge about the issues facing case management now and into the future. Eliza has been on the CMSA Board since 2008. |

Gary Humphrey I bring to CMSA a perspective of one who has worked in a variety of case management roles across a variety of organisations and departments. Combined with my management experience I am an individual who is motivated towards achieving best possible evidence based practices. My qualifications and background include the following: • The advanced Diploma of Community Services• Bachelor of Social Work Honours• Advanced Diploma of Business ManagementOrganisations and positions through this period have included the following: • Various non-government agencies• Department of Human Services• Department of Social Security• Department of Education• The public health system• An advisor for a federal local memberAs a professional educator and an innovative and professionally minded person, the personal characteristics I bring to CMSA are excellent communication skills, motivation, leadership and inspiration. I have a proven track record in delivering a management style that reflects a services mission and focuses on the continual improvement of services for people. I have demonstrated a high level of interpersonal skills and highly developed organisational skills, I am a resourceful individual and highly perceptive in analysing situations. Gary has been on the CMSA Board since 2008. |

My current position is Director of Aged and Disability at Mitchell Community Health Services where I am currently managing the whole range of HACC services, including In home support, allied health, PAG, delivered meals, District Nursing, Aged Care Case Management and Disability Case Management. I have also managed case management services including Linkages, CACP, and EACH, and have worked in Case Management and supervised and managed case managers for over 10 years. This includes work in community aged care, disability, family violence, corrections and community health. I have completed an MBA as well as a Master of Management degree. I am also a registered psychologist with over 15 years experience leading people in the Human Services industry. I have operated at senior management level regarding strategic and operational issues, and have played a significant role in change management. I bring a broad range of knowledge and experience to the board with a broad view of case management and the role that case managers play in assisting clients. Evan has been on the CMSA Board since 2008. |

Nicole Brooke is a passionate and committed practitioner and researcher, looking to support case management within Australia and internationally. Nicole has extensive insight into the community and residential aged care industry. She seeks to bring a breadth of knowledge and insight into the complexities of case management, to the CMSA. With intent to further develop resources and continue discussions to support case management in its future. Nicole Brooke is currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS). Nicole has worked in various senior management positions within including Director of Nursing, and more recently the Director of Clinical Practice at UTS. Nicole has Bachelor of Nursing (ACU), Masters of Adult Education (UTS) and is currently completing her Doctorate of Philosophy (UTS) on Case Management. Nicole currently teaches in nursing and management areas across undergraduate and postgraduate areas. Nicole is seeking to implement case management philosophies into the Bachelor of Nursing Course (UTS) and write a Graduate Diploma in Case Management. Nicole Brookes’ PhD research has been about identifying elements that make case management effective, and implementation within the residential aged care industry. The range of approaches and models reviewed has been across a large number of industry sectors including but not exclusively; acute care, community, mental health, and aged care. Nicole has been an invited speaker at a number of national and international conferences. Nicole has been on the CMSA Board since 2008. |

Katherine McNaught I am a Registered Nurse with 8 years experience in Community Care. I have worked both in the ACT and Victoria as a Case Manager and District Nurse. I have been employed with Baptcare (Community Aged Care Package Provider) for the last 7 years and am the Manager of Quality and Clinical Care (Community Aged Care). As a recent recruit to the world of management I feel that I can bring a ‘grassroots’ level perspective to the Board. Working as a Case Manager with Baptcare for 5 years has allowed me to develop a broad understanding of the role and a keen interest in ensuring the continuing development of the profession. As the Manager of Quality and Clinical Care at Baptcare I work towards ensuring that we achieve best practice standards in both clinical governance and case management. In my day to day work I utilise the practical experience that I have gained in Case Management to ensure that any system and process changes will be workable and engaging for Care Managers. I believe that this experience enables me to make a valuable contribution to the CMSA board. Katherine has been on the CMSA Board since 2008. |
